Essential walks in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees rival many mountains. No match for the Alps or the Massif Central, they stand out in the French landscape with their majestic cliffs, snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes and green slopes. Easily accessible after a short walk, this panorama will leave you speechless. This is the nature getaway you need to recharge your batteries and reconnect with nature. So, if you're interested, put on your trainers and let us introduce you to some walks in the Pyrenees.

Hiking in the Pyrenees with children

If you're on holiday with the whole family, you're probably thinking about what activities you can do with the little ones. Why not opt for a walk in the Pyrenees? Yes, hiking is not necessarily reserved for adults. Your children will be delighted to discover breathtaking landscapes, especially if you turn the walk into a game (the investigations of the FBI - the Force Béarnaise d'Investigation - in the bastides, the orientation trail in Lestelle-Bétharram, the Baburet mines in Ferrières). Guaranteed to amaze.

Amongst the best walks to do in the Pyrenees with children, we recommend

  • the Soum lake;
  • the circus of Litor ;
  • the excursion to the Gaube lake;
  • the Saugué plateau;
  • the tour of the lake of Aumar;
  • the tour of the Oule lake;
  • the Basque coastal path...

Each of these excursions will make you discover the Pyrenees as you have never seen them before. So come on, tie your shoes!

Our advice for a WELL-prepared hike in the Pyrenees with children:

The first thing to bear in mind is the altitude because, depending on the age of the child, some paediatricians advise against hiking because of the difficulty of acclimatising to the drop in pressure and oxygen (1 year old: 1200 metres altitude, 4 to 6 years old: 2000 to 2200 metres altitude, 8 to 12 years old: 2500 to 3000 metres altitude...).
Our second piece of advice is, of course, to start with a simple experience to gently introduce your tribe to the mountains.
 Finally, our last recommendation concerns the equipment necessary for a walk in the Pyrenees.

You should bring :

  • a baby carrier for small children;
  • a fleece, a compressible down jacket, a scarf, a hat, gloves, a K-way and a wide-brimmed hat (depending on the weather);
  • hiking boots;
  • IP50+ sun cream for the face and IP50+ sun stick for the lips;
  • CE category 3 or 4 sunglasses for children;
  • a bottle of water or insulated bottles for the little ones, as well as a snack.
  • A first aid kit for minor injuries

Hiking in the Pyrenees with a person with reduced mobility

One might think that hiking is not accessible for people with reduced mobility... Wrong! In fact, many natural sites are equipped to facilitate access for persons with reduced mobility. So come on, grab a joelette and set off on an adventure! How do you do it? What is a joelette? What is it? What is a joelette? It's an all-terrain, single-wheeled wheelchair that requires the accompaniment of two people and allows people with motor disabilities to go for walks and hikes - a great invention to enjoy a trip to the countryside together!

Looking for a trail adapted to a person with a disability? Here are some accessible trails by joelette:

  • the lake of Castelnau-Magnoac ;
  • the greenway of the Gaves ;
  • the Vallon du Salut ;
  • the lake of Tech ;
  • the Estaing lake;
  • the interpretation path of the Col des Tentes;
  • the Génos-Loudenvielle lake...

You should also know that some of the trails are accessible on wheels. In fact, they are circuits created by the department to welcome wheelchair users, but also children with tricycles, scooters...

Now that you know the best walks to do in the Pyrenees, where are we?
