In the Amazon, humans have developed “tapirage,” an ancient art that allows them to intentionally alter the color of feathers—a process that remains poorly understood despite having been described since the time of the conquistadors. This lecture explores this mystery, from the Amazonian jungle to the Moche pyramids of Peru, and presents a recently discovered source of coloration: fluorescence.
