Les Granges de la Hountagnère

The villages of the Pyrenees all have what we call a barns quarter. Half-way between the valley and the mountain, between 700 and 1000m ( 2296.59 and 3280.84ft.) altitude, these quarters are a transitional step during transhumance. The flocks stay there during spring and autumn. The barns with walls made of stones and a roof made of slates provide a cowshed or a sheepfold on the ground floor and a hay barn upstairs where the hay is stored on the floor. Some barns have a hut to shelter the shepherd. Surrounding each barn is a hayfield enclosed by a hedge.
